Q

How is ‘light’ used in the poem?

A

Used as a symbol of truth and enlightenment to show how the world should be viewed - ‘light’ enables us to ‘altar’ or change things in our lives and through its power we can understand the restrictions or ‘borderlines’ on the ‘maps’ of our lives

Q

How is paper used as an extended metaphor?

A

Used as a metaphor for the power of humankind as well as the fragility of that power - poem explores where paper is used within our lives from the humble ‘fine slips’ of shopping receipts to the romance of ‘maps’ with their ‘rail tracks, mountain folds’ - yet these examples are fragile ‘paper is thinned by age or touching’ and can ‘easily….fall away on a sigh’
