what is thrombocytopenia
a low platelet count
Issues that relate to production of platelets
Sepsis
B12 or folic acid deficiency
Liver failure causing reduced thrombopoietin production in the liver
Leukaemia
Myelodysplastic syndrome
issues that relate to destruction of platelets

presentation of thrombocytopenia
nosebleeds
bleeding gums
heavy periods
easy bruising
blood in urine or stools
what it ITP
Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura
what occurs in Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura
ITP is a condition where antibodies are created against platelets. This causes an immune response against platelets, resulting in the destruction of platelets and a low platelet count.
management of ITP
-prednisolone
- IV immunoglobulin
-rituximab
-splenectoy
what is ttp
Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura
what occurs in ttp
tiny blood clots develop throughout the small vessels of the body using up platelets and causing thrombocytopenia
why do blood vlots develop in TTP
- issue with protein ADAMTS13
- normally inactivates von willebrand factor& reduces platelet adhesion
