what are charities?
• charities are not set up to make a profit but to raise money for good causes
• to be recognised as a charity the organisation must have one of the following aims; to relieve poverty, to advance education, to carry out activities to help the community, to support a specific group of people, to gain more volunteers
• ownership - founders of the charity or volunteers
• control - board of directors and regulated by government
what are voluntary organisations?
• ownership - owned by members of the club that pay their subscription. they bring people together with similar interests
• ran and staffed by volunteers
• control - ran by a committee of elected volunteers; chairperson, treasurer, secretary
what are social enterprises?
• social enterprises are businesses that trade to tackle social problems to; improve communities, peoples life chances, improve the environment
• they make money from selling goods and services in the open market however they reinvest their profits back into the business or the local community
