Thiazide and Thiazide-like Duuretics Flashcards
1
Q
MOA
A
- Inhibits Na+, K+, and Cl- reabsorption in the distal tube -> water loss
- Relaxes / dilates peripheral arterioles
2
Q
Therapeutic effects
A
- Excretion of H2O, Na+, K+, Cl-, without altering the pH
2. Peripheral arteriole relaxation -> decrease resistance -> decrease afterload (takes time)
3
Q
Indications
A
- HTN
2. Fluid overload / edema
4
Q
Precautions
A
- Impaired renal function
- Pre-existing dehydration
- Pre-existing electrolyte disturbances (hypokalemia)
5
Q
Contraindications
A
- Severe renal failure
2. Untreated dehydration / electrolyte disturbance (hypokalemia)
6
Q
Side effects / adverse effects
A
- Electrolyte disturbances = hypokalemia
2. Headache, dizziness
7

Thiazide Example of Drugs
A
Hygroton or Diuril (chlorothiazide)
HydroDiuril (hydrochlorothiazide, HCTZ)*
*additive HTN agent
9
Q
Thiazide-like Example of Drugs
A
Zaroxolyn (metolazone) *usually added to something else - loop
