design argument
The Design Argument
the argument that God designed the unirverse because everything is so intricatly made in detail that it could not have happened by chance
William Paley’s design argument
The Design Argument
A watch for example:
- if found would be acknowledged as being designed for a purpose (even with no prior knowledge)
- so some one must of designed it
- so the complexity and order found in nature indicates that the world must have a designer -> God
Design Argument - Quote
The Design Argument
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hand
Design Arugment - Objections
The Design Argument
- the complexity and order of nature is a result of natrual selection not God
- if the universe was designed by an all loving God have so much evil (natrual and moral)
first cause argument
First Cause Argument
- everything that exists or begins to exists must have a cause
- the universe exists and began to exist, so much also have a cause
- there had to be something eternal without a cause
- eternal first cause must be god
- so god exists
- hinges on beliefs that the universe has a start
- modern theists may belive that god caused the big bang to happen
Thomas Aquinas first cause argument
- nothing can become something by itself and nothing is nothing until something is added
either:
- there is an infinite chain of effects preceeded by cause
- there must be first cause which by definition must be uncaused (God)
First Cause - Objections
- if everything has a cause -> what caused God
- if god has always existed why not the universe as well
- big bang was random + spontaneous
- religious creation stories are myths
miracle
a seemingly impossible eents, usally good that cannot be explained by natrual or scientific laws
