Theme 3 Part 2 Flashcards
What happens to SA:v ratio as animals get larger
Support is ___- dependent
Mass is ______ dependent
Decreases
Area
Volume
What is isometric scaling
Proportions stay the same (all oarts grown in same proportion to each other)
Slope = 1
What is allometric scaling
Disproportionate
Some part of animal are getting larger disproportionate to other parts
When animals grow larger what needs to happen to their limbs
The limbs dimensions need to change to support the mass of the large animal
The limbs need to be directly below the animal. Instead sprawling stance like the ant
As body size increases , the skeleton size ____
Disproportionally Increases more
Slope greater than 1
As body size increases , the metabolic rate ____
Derecreaes more
Since SA is increasing less than volume is , it needs less energy to stay warm so it does less metabolic rate
Slope less than 1
What is kleibers law
As things get larger, metabolic rate decreases more
How does the skeleton develop when going to land
Stronger limbs
Thick and heavy rib cages that enclosed the lungs and organs to support the weight
Articulated spine to support the limbs, spine attached to pelvic and pectoral girdles (spine connected to skull in fish tho)
Mobile neck
How does the stance change when moving to land
Small animals have a sprawling stance (need less support) legs on sides
Large animals have erect stance (bone can now support mass of the body)
What are max speeds limited by
Mass
Too light, too slow
Too heavy, too slow
Regular mass, faster
Why did whale go back to water?
At first being larger was better, but since as land evolved, they’re too big to stay on land
