What is Sociology?
The study of social relationships and institutions, with the processes that form different aspects of society.
What is Socialisation?
The process by which people learn the culture, values and norms of society.
What is Primary Socialisation?
- Socialisation that occurs during early childhood.
- Children learn skills, language and behaviour patterns they will need in later life
- Agencies of Primary Socialisation are usually families and parents
What is Secondary Socialisation?
- Socialisation that occur during late childhood and continues throughout adulthood.
- People learn society’s norms and values
- Agencies of Secondary Socialisation include peer groups, schools, religions, workplaces and the mass media.
What is culture?
The way of life, characteristics, knowledge and customs of a certain group of people.
What are norms?
Ideas of what is socially acceptable widely accepted by a group of people.
What are values?
Beliefs that underpin norms.
(e.g, it’s a norm to shake someone’s hand when they hold it out to you, the value that underpins that is wanting to be polite)
What is the mass media?
Media technologies broadcasted to a wide audience. This includes TV, radio, films, music, and streaming services.
When was Max Webber born, and when did he die?
1864-1920.
What is the difference between theories of conflict and consensus?
Theories of conflict suggest society is based on disagreement or inequality. (eg, between men and women in feminism)
Theories of consensus suggest society is based on general agreement and/or harmony. (eg, value consensus in functionalism)
What is value consensus?
When people agree with their society’s norms and values.
What is social stratification?
The organisation of people into different groups within social hierarchy based on their power, status, or prestige.
What is gender?
The roles, expectations, ideas and practices society holds linked to perceptions of masculinity and femininity.
What is a society?
A group of people who share a culture or way of life
What is a social institution?
A group or organisation that has specific rules, norms and expectations.
