The Skeletal System Flashcards
What are the 5 functions the skeleton has
1 blood cell reproduction
2muscle attachment
3 mineral storage
4 joints for movement
5 protection of vital organs
Describe blood cell reproduction
Some bones contain red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
Describe muscle attachment
The skeleton provides a surface for muscles to attach. Movement is then achieved
Describe mineral storage
Calcium and phosphorus is stored in the bones.
Calcium for strong bones
Phosphorus to reduce muscle pain
Describe joints for movement
Where 2 or more bones meet to create movement
Describe protection of vital organs
Protect organs which is vital for performance so you don’t nave the fear of of serious injury
What are the 4 bone classifications
Long, short, flat, irregular
What are long bones and what are their roles
They are longer than they are wide and they allow leverage and movement
What are short bone and what role do they have in the body
Box like in shape and are designed to be weight bearing
What are flat bones and what are their roles in the body
Flat thin, plate bones that provide protection
and large surface area which muscle can attach
What are irregular bones and what are their roles in the body
They are unusually shaped mines for a unique purpose that provide a large surface area
What is the order of the vertebral column
Cervical
Thoracic
Lumbar
Sacrum
Coccyx
What are the 4 joint classifications
Pivot
Ball in socket
Hinge
Condyloid
Where is the pivot joint located
Atlas and axis of the neck
What movement does the pivot join allow
Rotation
Where is the ball and socket joint located and what movement does it allow
Hip and shoulder
Flextion and extention
Adduction and abduction
Circumduction
Rotation
Shere is a hinge joint located and what movement does it allow
Ankle elbow and knee
Flextion and extention
At the ankle it only allows plantar and dorsi Flexion
Where is a Condyloid joint located and what movement does it allow
Wrist
Flextion and extention
Abduction and adduction
Circumduction
What are ligaments
Connect bones together
What are tendons
Connect muscles to bones
What do red blood cells do
Provide oxygen
What do white blood cells do
Fight of infections
What do platelets do
They clot blood
