1964 and ended de jure segregation in all public facilities - racial discrimination was no longer enshrined in law.

29,000 people, 1/2 of who were black and only 23 had the vote in selma.

was the sheriff of Dallas county Alabama and King new that he would react violenty towards the peaceful protest.
what happened to the protesters?
it was named “bloody sunday” as they were attacked with clubs and tear gas, and venomous snakes were thrown at them. 1 black youth was shot protecting his mother from being beaten and a black women was clubbed.
what happened to MLK during the protest?
he was sent to jail and sent an effective letter saying “ they’re more Negros in jail with me than there is in the voting tolls.”
when was the voting right act passed and what did this do?
1965, it gave black people the right to vote without the need to pass the literacy tests
how many people were now registered to vote in Mississippi after the voting rights act was passed?
in Mississippi, by 1968 59% were now registered to vote. - this was what came out of the Selma march.
how did the voting rights act enable black people to exceed in other areas of society?
The voting rights act also mean’t more black people were elected, for example Mayor of Fayette Mississippi - Charles Evers (1969)
