The Restless Earth: Volcanoes Flashcards
Where are VOLCANOES found?
At destructive and constructive plate boundaries.
What happens at a DESTRUCTIVE plate boundary?
Oceanic plate goes under the Continental plate because its more dense.
Where does the OCEANIC plate go at a destructive plate boundary?
Down into the mantle where it is destroyed and melted.
After the oceanic plate has went into the mantle, what happens next?
Pool of magma is formed.
After the a pool of magma is formed, what happens next?
Magma rises through cracks in the crust called vents.
After the magma has rised up through the vents, what happens next?
Magma erupts onto the surface.
Forming a volcano.
What is the magma called when it has REACHED the surface?
Lava.
Name the 3 different types of volcanoes?
Composite.
Shield.
Dome.
Give an example of a COMPOSITE volcano?
Mount Fuji in Japan.
What is a COMPOSITE volcano made up of?
Ash and Lava.
That’s erupted, cooled and hardened into layers.
Describe the LAVA in a composite volcano?
Thick and flows slowly.
Hardens quick to form steep-sided volcano.
Give an example of a SHIELD volcano?
Mauna Loa, Hawaiian islands.
What are SHIELD volcanoes only made up of?
Lava.
Describe the LAVA in a shield volcano?
Runny.
Flows quick.
Spreads over a wide area.
What type of VOLCANO does a shield volcano make?
Low.
Flat.
