The Restless Earth Test Revision Flashcards
What is the definition of a crust?
The thinnest layer of rock, that is above the mantle and is moved by the the convection currents.
What is the definition of a plate?
A piece of the earths crust that is also moved by the mantle, although some sometimes in a different direction than the main plate.
Name an example of a main plate.
African plate Eurasian plate North American plate South American plate Pacific plate Nazca plate Antarctic plate Indo-Australian plate
What is the definition of a plate margin?
The edge of a plate, where it touches another plate.
What is the definition of convection currents?
The currents that rise and fall due to heat or the lack of heat.
What is destructive subduction?
When a oceanic plate and a continental plate collide, and as a side product earthquakes, volcanoes and fold mountains occur.
What is a destructive collision?
When continental plates collide, and as a side product earthquakes and fold mountains.
What is constructive movements?
When continental plates pull apart, and as a side product earthquakes and volcanoes.
What is conservative movement?
When a oceanic plate and a continental plate slide besides each other, and as a side product earthquakes are produced.
How is a ocean trench produced?
It is produced when a oceanic plate slides under a continental plate, and gets stuck, and the continental plate gets pulled down.
What is a collision?
When a continental plate hits another continental plate ‘head on’.
How many main plates are there?
Eight
