The Nervous System Flashcards
What is the function of the nervous system
Controls and coordinates all other body systems chemical and electrical signals
Also in conjunction with the endocrine system - responsible for homeostasis
What is the sensory function of the nervous system
Detects stimuli both external - sight, sound, small, taste and touch
Internal - pain, temperature, pressure and chemical
What is integrative function of the nervous system
Integrates, processes, analyse and stores sensory information - this allows cognitive and consciousness
Patients with a neurological injury what would occur
Loss of sensory and motor function along with integrative function aka awareness, memory, emotions, judgment
Motor function
Controls all effector organs, muscles and glands - links to endocrine system
Maintains internal homeostasis and directs behaviour
Describe the cells of the nervous system - neurons
Transmits electrical signals
Nervous tissue is compromised of two major classes of cells
Neuron’s - aka neuron’s or nerve cells
Glial cells - aka neuroglia
What is a glia cell
The ‘glue’ that holds the nervous system together
What is a microglia
Specialised nervous system macrophages ( destroys pathogens and clears debris)
