What does Messiah mean?
The one who has been anointed
In the Old Testament who was anointed reserved for?
- Kings, who were appointed by God and anointed in his name
How were they anointed?
By the pouring of olive oil - a public sign of having been chosen by God for kingship
Where did the notion of a Messiah come from?
- the hope that one day in the future a new king of Israel, from the house of David, would come from God and rule over a renewed people of God
Who did people believe the messiah would be?
- some believed he would be a divine figure
- others suggested that it would be a man especially chosen by God
For Christians Christ is the Messiah and Jesus admits it himself when?
John 4:25-26 woman said she knew that that the messiah was coming and when he come he will explain everything to them
- then Jesus declared “i who speak to you am he”
How is John 4:25-26 important?
It suggests that Jesus was the fulfillment of God’s redemption plan and so is properly seen as the foundation of Christian belief
