The Lymphatic Connection Flashcards
What is the lymphatic system
Runs parallel to the circulatory system, the lymphatic system is a network of tissues and organs that rid then body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials
What is the primary function of the lymphatic system
Transport lymph which carries WBC’s through the body
Where do B-cells mature
Bone marrow
Where do T-cells mature
Thymus
What is the function of the primary lymphoid organs
Production and maturation of lymphocytes. Consists of the bone marrow and the thymus
What are the secondary organs of the lymphatic system
Lymph nodes
What is the function of a lymph node
Capture antigens that arrive from the lymphatic fluids and initiate an immune response
What is the function of the spleen
Serves as a blood filter in order to perform antigen recognition. Functions as a storage and production site for blood cells.
What does MALT stand for
Mucosal associated lymphoid tissue
What does MALT consist of
Nasal Associated Immune Tissue (NALT) Bronchus Associated Immune Tissue (BALT) Gut Associated Immune Tissue (GALT)
What are Peyers Patches
Located in the gut submucosa. T-cells and dendritic cells sample what passes through the M cell membrane
