The main reason might have been for food. The islands had land for planting and game for hunting. Some settlers might have wanted to set up their own communities while others may have been fleeing to avoid enslavement from more powerful civilizations such as that of the Aztec, Mayan and Inca. Some may have just been following the human urge to explore.

Explain the process of conuco cultivation
Each family would have a conuco or small farm plot. The family members would clear the land by felling trees and burning bushes to prepare for the tilling and planting process. A family would cultivate a conuco for 2-3 years . When the soil was no longer fertile the family would move on to a new plot. The old conuco would be left uncultivated for about the same time before it was brought back into production.
