- The Ordinary World
Bilbo is comfortable and content in his hobbit hole in the Shire.
Polarity: Bilbo’s ancestry conflict. The Took side is adventurous and unpredictable, while the Bagginses side are “respectable” and predictable hobbits
- The Call to Adventure
Gandalf recruits Bilbo as a burglar for the expedition
- Refusal of the Call
Bilbo is very reluctant and unprepared.
- Meeting with the Mentor
Gandalf keeps Bilbo focused on the goal and reassures he is important to the group
- Crossing the Threshold
Bilbo embarks on the adventure rather hastily
- Tests, Allies, and Enemies
Encounters trolls, goblins, wargs, spiders as enemies.
Eagles and Beorn are allies.
Tests: Gollum’s riddle game, saving dwarves from spiders, breaking them out of elf prison, distract and kill spiders
- Approach
The company arrives at Lake Town and prepare to leave for the Lonely Mountain to steal the treasure
8 . The Ordeal
Bilbo approaches Smaug and faces his fears alone. Doesn’t turn back.
- The Reward
The dwarves gain possession of the treasure (since Bard slayed Smaug) but it is put in danger of losing it to the Orcs, goblins and wargs. The Battle of Five Armies commences.
- The Road Back
Bilbo and Gandalf head back to the Shire, stopping at Beorn’s for the winter and Rivendell to see Elrond.
- The Resurrection
Bilbo returns to Bag-End to find out everyone presumed he died and were in the midst of selling his household items.
Bilbo’s Took and Baggins side are now in harmony. He does not care what other hobbits think of him (loses his reputation)
- Return with The Elixir
Bilbo returns home with a magic ring, which has great power.
