The Foot Flashcards
What are the anatomical names for the bones the comprise the ankle joint?
Tibia, fibula, talus
How many bones, joints and muscles are there in the foot?
In each foot there are 26 bones, 31 joints, and 20 intrinsic muscles
What do we often call the ankle bones?
(one is composed mostly of the distal fibula and a connection to the medial tibia) (the other, which is comprised of the distal portion of the medial tibia)
the lateral malleolus and the medial malleolus
the muscle at the lateral tibial condyle and lateral shaft of the tibia and inserts onto the medial cuneiform and the base of metatarsal 1. This is the strongest dorsiflexor.
Tibialis anterior
Arises form the central medial fibula and interosseous membrane inserts on the distal phalanx I. It’s primary action is dorsiflexion (extension) of the big toe.
Extensor hallucis longus
Originates at the head and the superolateral shaft of the fibula and inserts on the medial cuneiform and base of metatarsal I. It actually wraps underneath the calcaneus to insert of the bottom of the foot. It along with the posterior tibialis helps form a sling to stabilize the ankle and to support the arches to stabilize the foot particularly in plantar flexion.
Peroneus longus
Deepest of the calf muscles. Originates at the postero-superior tibia and fibular shafts and interosseous membrane, runs posterior to the medial malleolus and inserts on medial navicular as well as onto the lateral cuneiform and metatarsals II-IV. Action: plantar flexion and helps support the arch of the foot
Tibialis posterior
What four muscles that help stabilize the ankle while in demi-pointe?
peroneus longus, peroneus brevis, extensor hallucis longus, tibialis posterior
This muscle arises broadly from the posterosuperior tibia and fibula and merges with the gastrocnemius to insert on the Achilles tendon. It aids in plantar flexion particularly in walking.
Soleus
The soleus and the gastrocnemius together are called the…
