The Eye Flashcards
What is a cornea ?
A transparent window which protects the eye and helps refract rays of light
What is the pupil ?
A hole in the eye that allows light to enter
What is the iris ?
Circular muscle that controls the size of the pupil and comes in different colours
What is the sclera ?
A tough white layer on the outside of the eye
What is the retina ?
An area at the back of the eye we’re there are no receptor cells
What is the jelly ?
Refracts rays of light and focuses them on the fovea
What is the lens ?
Substance to help blend light and maintain the eyes shape
What is the ciliary muscle ?
A muscle that contracts and relaxes to alter the thickness of the lens
What are the suspensory ligaments ?
Holds the lens in place
What is the optic nerve ?
The means of communication between the eye and the Brain
What is the fovea ?
An area of the retina where cone cells are found allowing the brain to detect colour
What is the blind spot ?
A wall of cells containing light reactive pigment
When light receptors in the eye detect bright light the pupil becomes ?
- smaller
- larger
The circular muscles ?
- contract
- relax
The radial muscles ?
- contract
- relax

When light receptors in the eye detect dim light a reflex is triggered that makes the pupil ?
- smaller
- larger
The circular muscles ?
- contract
- relax
The radial muscles ?
- contract

When looking at near objects ciliary muscles ?
- tighten
