The Endocrine System Flashcards
what is the endocrine system?
instructs certain glands to release hormones into the blood stream
where are hormones released to?
target organs
what does the endocrine system work on?
feedback system
communicates to produce the correct amount of hormones, shuts down when enough is produced
what is the hypothalamus?
brain structure that links the nervous system and endocrine system (part of CNS)
what does the hypothalamus regulate?
drives e.g hunger
what does the hypothalamus control?
pituitary gland
what is the pituitary gland known as?
master gland, controls the release of hormones from all other endocrine glands in the body
what hormone does the thyroid gland produce?
thyroxine
what does thyroxine increase?
heart rate
metabolic rate
what hormone does the adrenal gland produce?
adrenaline
when is adrenaline produced?
short-term stress
what can adrenaline lead to?
increased heart rate
comparison between NS + ES - mode of transmission
NS: electrical messages travel along neuron
ES: hormones are chemicals released into blood stream
comparison between NS + ES - release
NS: send signals to all parts of body through network of nerves
ES: can affect various glands in different parts
comparison between NS + ES - speed
NS: quick/rapid
ES: gradual/longer
