The Endocrine System Flashcards
How do exocrine glands release their products?
They release their products into ducts or tubes
Give an example of an exocrine gland.
Salivary glands, sweat glands
Name the differences between the nervous system and the endocrine system.
Nervous: uses electrical impulses, fast acting, short lived response, localised, eg. catching a ball
Endocrine: uses bloodstream, slower acting, chemical, long lasting effects, effects may be widespread
How do endocrine glands release their product?
- They have no ducts
- Products are released directly into the blood stream
What is a hormone?
Is a chemical messenger produced by an endocrine gland and carried by the bloodstream to another part of the body, where it has a specific effect.
Where is the pituitary gland located?
Below the brain
What is the name of the hormone produced in the pituitary gland and state its function?
- Growth hormone
- Regulates growth
Where is the hypothalamus located?
Above the pituitary gland
What is the name of the hormone produced in the hypothalamus and state its function?
- GHRF growth hormone releasing factor
- Causes pituitary gland to make growth hormone
Where is the pineal gland located?
Near the hypothalamus
What is the name of the hormone produced in the pineal and state its function?
- Melatonin
- Controls body rhythms
