The Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the endocrine system
System of glass that work together to create and distribute hormones
Major endocrine glands and their functions
PANCREAS released insulin, glucagon, somastatin and pancreatic polypeptide
PINEAL GLAND releases hormones
2 parts of the brain that play a major part in the endocrine system
Hypothalamus
Pituitary gland
How does the hypothalamus help regulate the activity of the pituitary gland?
Secretes releasing and inhibitory hormones to the pituitary gland to tell it to send/inhibit hormones to the other glands
What is a hormone
Chemical released into blood to bind and act on certain target cells
Two major classes of hormones and how they act on cells
PEPTIDE HORMONES bind to surface receptors then send a signal to nucleus
STEROID HORMONES bind to cytoplasm receptors then move to nucleus
Positive feedback loop
Childbirth
Baby pressure on cervix~ brain released oxytocin~ oxytocin makes contractions~ repeats until no pressure on cervix
Negative feedback loop
Temp receptors sense hot- signal to hot to hypothalamus- hormones sent to cool off- temp receptors sense normal- hypothalamus stops hormone flow
Hormone path
Hypothalamus- Ovaries
Hypothalamus- GnRH - anterior pituitary gland - FSH/LH - ovaries
Effects of adrenaline and noradrenaline
Released to stimulate fight or flight response and keep up the body’s necessary functions to stay alive
Actions of insulin
Promotes glucose regulation
Stabilizes blood sugar level
Causes liver to store glucose
Primary female sex hormone
Estrogen
Primary male sex hormone
Testosterone
What is the flight or fight response and what hormones activated
Adrenaline and noradrenaline. Response to keep the body safe increased alertness blood pressure and heart rate
What is the difference between type one and type two diabetes
1- Pancreas can’t produce enough insulin
2- Obesity so so long to respond to the insulin created by the pancreas managed by weight regulation
