The Electromagnetic Spectrum Flashcards
What are the seven types of electromagnetic radiation in order:
Radio wave, micro wave, infrared radiation, visible light, ultraviolet, x-ray, gamma ray
What are the uses of radio waves:
TV signals
What are the uses of micro waves:
Cooking, phones
What are the uses of infrared radiation:
Optical fibre communication
What are the uses of visible light:
Seeing (duh)
What are the uses of ultraviolet light:
Detecting forged bank notes
What are the uses of x-rays:
(do we have to do this?) medical images of bones
What are the uses of gamma rays:
Killing cancer cells (yeah!)
What are the hazards of micro waves:
They heat body tissue
What are the hazards of infrared radiation:
It’s felt as heat and can cause burns
What are the hazards of x- and gamma rays:
They can cause mutations in cells which may lead to cancer and cell death (reassuring)
What is the speed of light:
299,792,458 m/s (300,000,000)
Who first measured the speed of light:
Olaus Roemer, a Danish astronomer
How was the speed of light first measured:
By examining the eclipses on Jupiter
What other ways have the speed of light been calculated:
With lasers, microwaves and a rotating mirror amongst others
