THE EAR Flashcards
What are the 3 special senses that the ear serves as a receptor organ
hearing
static equilibrium
dynamic equilibrium
It is an external ear flap that protects the auditory opening. Functions as an a “radiator” in thermoregulation
Auricle (pinna)
It is a tube-like passage that carries airborne sound waves. Also called an ear canal.
External auditory meatus
Also called as ear drum. It carries the sound energy into the middle ear
Tympanic membrane
It is an air-filled cavity lined with mucous membrane
Middle ear
Also called as the hammer. Tiny, club-shaped bone attached to eardrum. It vibrates when sound waves pass through from the eardrum
Malleus
Also called an anvil. this is tiny bone forms a synovial joint with the malleus
Incus
Also called stirrup. This ossicle is joined to the incus, from which it receives vibrations. The vibrations are amplified for better reception
Stapes
collapsible tube running between the middle ear and the pharynx. It allows internal pressure to equalize with atm so that the high pressure on one side does not muffle the eardrum
Auditory (eustachian) tube
it is the third division of the ear apparatus
inner ear
a maze like__________ contains a similarly shaped but smaller membranous labyrinth
bony labyrinth
The fluid inside the membranous labyrinth is called _____________
endolymph
the fluid around the outside of the membranous labyrinth is called __________
perilymph
long passage coiled like a snail
cochlea
central area of the inner ear
vestibule
