A

A

Anti communist hysteria was growing in USA, so the government wanted to find potential communists and stop them from spreading their views (POST COLD WAR)

A

A senator who campaigned against communism, saying that communists had secretly infiltrates the US.
He was known for his aggressive questioning and accusing people with little evidence.

A

A

-One of his friends (Kazan) was arrested, but he gave names of other friends to free himself - distrust
-He was summoned for questioning AFTER PLAY WAS FIRST PERFORMED because the fact that the crucible seemed to criticise the witch hunts made him suspicious.
