The Cognitive Approach For Treating Depression Flashcards
Cognitive behaviour therapy
Begins with an assesment to identify goals for the therapy and irrational thoughts to be challenaged. Then involves Woking towards putting more effective behaviours in place.
Becks cognitive therapy
Identify automatic thoughts about the world the future and the self
Once identified are challenged
Test the reality of the irrational beliefs
Ellis REBT cognitive therapy
Extends the ABC model to ABCDE model d= dispute e= effect
Eg a client would discuss how unfair life is and therapist would dispute their Utopianism
Empirical arguement to dispute whether there is actual evidence to support irrational beliefs
Behavioural activation
As individuals become depressed they tend to avoid increasingly difficult situations and therefore become isolated which in turn worsens their symptoms
Behavioural activation gradually brings depressed clients back into these situations in order to decrease their isolation
Evaluation positives
+ large body of evidence
March compared cbt to antidepressants 81% of cbt clients and 81% of antidepressant users were improved whereas 86% of cbt combined with drug users were improved
Meaning cbt just as effective and more so when combined.
Cbt fairly brief so cost effective
Evaluation negatives
- suitability for diverse clients - lack of effectiveness for those paired with learning disabilities can be so severe that motivation to attend sessions is very low.
And may not be able to pay attention to the therapy
Meaning only suitable for a specific group of people.
HOWEVER Taylor provided evidence that cbt is effective for those with learning difficulties. - relapse rates concerns over how long benefits last 42% relapsed in the first 6 months of cbt and 53% in the first year. May need to be repeated periodically.
