Seminary Priests - Priests who were trained to re establish the Catholic faith, destroy Protestantism, loyal to Pope and willing to be a martyr
Began returning to England in 1580, claiming to simply spread Catholic teachings
Didn’t have any military support yet laws made to tackle them
Rebellion of the Northern Earls 1569
4600 men marched into Durham and held Catholic Mass, tearing up English Bible.
Plan quickly failed as Elisabeth sent forces quickly to stop it
No military support: not that large or a threat
Papal Bull 1570
Pope Pius V excommunicated Elizabeth
Releases English Catholics of oath of allegiance to Queen
Gave them permission to overthrow Elizabeth, increased chance of rebellion
Elizabeth released Treason Act in 1571 as a response, was an offence to deny she was Queen of England now

Plot to replace Elizabeth with Mary
Involved Spanish land invasion
Walsingham foiled the plan
Fairly large threat due to support from King Philip, Mary QOS and Duke of Norfolk, may have caused war
Thockmorton Plot 1583
Farncis Throckmorton, young English Catholic
Involved French forced, backed by Spanish and Papal money
Plan uncovered by secret services and confessed to plans
Insisted Mary knew nothing
High threat due to support from many high powers
Babington Plot 1586
Catholic Nobleman Anthony Babington wrote letters in code to Mary for an overthrowing plot
Letters intercepted by Walsingham’s agents
Proved Mary’s involvement and sentenced her to death
