The Cardiovascular System Flashcards
It is made up of blood vessels that carry blood away from and towards the heart.
Cardiovascular System
What are the 2 (or 3) major divisions of Cardiovascular System?
- pulmonary circulation
- systemic circulation
- (cardiac circulation)
What is between the heart and lungs (right side of the heart)?
Pulmonary Circulation
What is between the heart and body (left side of the heart)?
Systemic Circulation
What is the third type of circulation that supply the heart itself with blood (coronary arteries… cardiac veins)?
Cardiac Circulation
What are the 3 components (and their function) of Circulatory System?
- heart (pumping the blood)
- blood vessels (passageways for the blood)
- blood (transport medium)
What are the functions of Circulatory System?
- move oxygen and nutrients to the body’s cells
- remove waste products from cells
- carry hormones to target tissues
- pick up nutrients from the digestive system
- maintain water balance (via kidneys)
- thermoregulation
Where is the heart located?
Mediastinum
What is the sac around the heart called?
Pericardium
What are the functions of Pericardium?
- allows heart to beat with minimal friction
- provides room to expand but resists excessive expansion
What are the 2 parts of Parietal Pericardium (pericardial sac)?
- outer dense fibrous layer
- inner serous layer
What is the space between the parietal and visceral layers of the pericardium that filled with pericardial fluid?
Pericardial Cavity
What are the 3 layers of the Heart Wall?
- epicardium
- myocardium
- endocardium
What is the thin, smooth, moist serous layer that covers the heart surface?
Epicardium
This layer contains cardiac muscle fibers.
Myocardium
