The Brain Flashcards
What are fontanelles
The space between the bones of a skull in an infant or fetus
Sensory neurons
Nerve cells that transmit sensory information eg. Sight, sound, feeling
Motor neurons
Carry messages from the central nervous system to parts of the body
Frontal lobe
Controls personality (primary motor cortex)
Parietal lobe
Sensations, touch (primary somato sensory)
Occipital lobe
Sight ( primary visual cortex)
Temporal lobe
Hearing ( primary auditory cortex)
Left brain
Controls the right side of the body. Controls practical skills eg. Maths
Right brain
Controls the left side of the body, creativity
FMRI
FMRI- functional magnetic resonance : measures brain activity by detecting changes associated with blood flow.
CT
Computed tomography: uses x-rays and digital computer technology to create detailed images of the body
PET
Positron Emission tomography
EEG
Electroencephalography - detects electrical activity in your brain using small flat metal disc attached to your scalp
MRI
Magnetic resonance imaging - uses magnetic field and radio waves to take pictures inside the body
