The Bohr Effect Flashcards
What is the Bohr effect
If the ODC curve worked out at different co2 partial pressure then Bohr effect is seen
Where would co2 concentration be high
In respiring cells eg muscles
What happens when co2 high
- Low affinity for o2
- o2 readily unloaded into muscle cells
What causes o2 to be readily unloaded
Low ph
What causes low ph
Dissolved co2 is acidic
How does low ph allow o2 to be released more easily
Cause hb to change shape allowing o2 being realised easily
Where is co2 conc low
At gas exchange surfaces
Why does gas exchange Cause low co2
Diffuses across exchange surfaces and excreted from organisms
What does low co2 cause
- High affinity for o2
- o2 readily loaded by hb
What does the Bohr effect cause
Makes hbo8 less efficient at holding onto its o2
