The Body Fluid Compartments Flashcards
Extra and intracellular fluids;Edema
what is the total intake of water?
2300 ml i.e 2100 ml by ingesting and 200 ml from metabolism inside the body.
why person with burns must be given large amount of fluid intravenously?
because in a person with burns has his cornified layer of cholesterol damaged and therefore fluid loss through his skin is 10-fold increased i.e 3 to 5L…therefore fluid is injected intravenously to balance fluid loss.
there is more water loss through the respiratory tract in cold or hot weather?
explain the dry feeling in the respiratory passages in cold weather ?
in cold weather the atmospheric pressure decreases to nearly 0° causing greater loss…dry feeling is due to this low atmospheric pressure
urine volume can be low as?
urine volume can be high as ?
0.5L/day low.
20L/day high
what is transcellular fluid? what is its normal amount ?
fluid present in synovial, peritonial, pericardial, intraocular spaces and in cerebrospinal fluid…it is about 1 to 2 liters..
total body water in the body?
60 % or 42 Litres
Extracellular compartment fluid ?
interstial and plasma fluid value ?
14 Litres extracellular
interstitial is 11 L and plasma is 3 L
In premature and new born babies, the total body water ranges from ?
70 to 75 percent of body weight
Intracellular fluid accounts for how much of body weight?
40% of body weight
28 Litres
the average volume of adults is ?
7 % body weight or 5 Litres
what is hematocrit and what is its value in men and women?
packed red blood cell volume
0.40 in men and 0.36 in women
in person with severe anemia the hematocrit value is ?
As low as 0.10…a value that is barely sufficient to sustain life
in polycythemia the hematocrit value is ?
0.65
name the ions abundant in extracelluar fluid and less in the intracellular fluid.
Na+,Cl-, Hco-3
which type of ions are more abundant in intracellular fluid?
potassium, phosphates, and magnesium and no calcium
