The Appendicular Skeleton Flashcards
Suprasternal notch
An indentation on the superior boarder of the top of the sternum
Manubrium
Top triangle of the sternum
Clavicular notch
2 indications on the lateral edges of the superior board of the sternum
Sternal angle
The bottom of the Manubrium and top of the body of the sternum
Body of the sternum
The area of attachment for the costal cartilages of ribs 2-10
Xiphoid process
An inferior triangle of the sternum
Inferior and superior facet of rib
the rib articulates with the transverse process of thoracic vertebrae through the ________ and ________
Head and neck of rib
The posterior area of the rib
Tubercle
A round process of the process of the rib
Costal grove
The inferior edge of the rib as it turns around to the anterior area of the body
Body of rib
The anterior length of the rib
Acromial end
Flat end if the clavicle that articulates with the acromion of the scapula
Sternal end
The triangular end of the clavicle that articulates with the Manubrium of the sternum
Conoid tubercle
A small rounded process on the inferior surface near the acromnial end of the clavicle
Supraspinous fossa
A depression that lies between the spine and acromion of the scapula
Infraspinous fossa
A depression that lies below the spine on the posterior surface of the scapula
Subscapular fossa
A depression on the anterior surface of the scapula
Glenoid fossa ( or glenoid cavity)
A hollow area that articulates with the head of the humerus
Acromion
Articulates with the acromion end of the clavicle and is located at the end of the spine on the scapula
Spine of scapula
A lifted area on the posterior end of the scapula
Coracoid process
A projection on the anterior surface of the scapula. It lies above the head of the humerus when joint is created
Greater tubercle of humerus
A small round process on the very top of the humerus.
Lesser tubercle
A small rounded proposes on the top the humerus that lies below it’s greater counterpart
Intertubercular sulcus (groove)
And indentation that lies between the two tubercle of the humerus
Head of the humerus
The medial side of the top of the humerus that articulates withe the scapula
Deltoid tuberosity
A large rounded process on the body of the humerus
Coronoid fossa of the humerus
An indentation on the anterior and medial end of the humours
Radial fossa
An indentation on the anterior and lateral end of the humerus
Lateral epicondyle
A prominence on the lateral edge of the humerus. Lies above the capitulum
Medial epicondyle
A round protuberance on the medial edge of the humerus. Lies above the trochlea
Capitulum
A rounded prominence on the lateral edge of the humerus. It is most inferior to all other feature except the trochlea. Articulates with the head of the radius
Trochlea
A round prominence on the medial edge of the humerus. It is the most inferior feature except for the capitulum
Olecranon fossa
A large indentation on the inferior and posterior side of the humerus.
Head and neck of the radius
Rotates the thumb because of its rounded shape. Articulates with the capitulum and the radial notch of the ulna.
Radial tuberosity
Below the neck of the radius and on the medial side lies a rounded process.
