the animal kingdom Flashcards
what are invertebrates?
species with no backbone
What are coelenterates?
They have a sac-like body with one hole acting as a mouth and an anus, they have tentacles with stinging cells. They live in aquatic habitats and reproduce by buddying, an example is a jellyfish
What are Platyhelminthes?
They have a flat thin body with no circulatory system so all gasses enter and exit through diffusion, they hermaphrodites so they reproduce asexually through binary fission and regenerate. They have suckers on their head and they are parasites ex. tapeworm
What are nematodes?
They are unsegmented and are round in cross-section, they are found in soil and are often plant or animal parasites. They are hermaphrodites’ and have a tapered end, end in a point, they have an elastic cuticle so when they grow they shed the cuticle to grow a new one. Ex Ascaris
What are annelids?
they are long segmented worms that have a digestive tract with a mouth on one end and an anus on the other. They have a circulatory system and they are hermaphrodites. The clitellum is smooth and has no segments. Ex. earthworms
what are mollusks?
They have a soft unsegmented body with an internal or external hard shell. They live in moist or aquatic environments, some can grow very large example a squid, they have a muscular foot and have a head on one end and an anus on the other. they have tentacles and eyes on their head. when they feel threatened they recoil into their shells
what are arthropods?
They live in all habitats, have an exoskeleton and joined limbs, their exoskeleton provides protection and sheds whilst the animal grows.
what are class crustations?
they have a hard exoskeleton with two pairs of antennae, one sensitive to touch the other is to chemicals. They have compound eyes and they grow by molting. Ex is a crap
