State the test for carbon dioxide.

A

Bubble the gas through limewater. If the gas is carbon dioxide, white precipitate would be observed. However, if there is no presence of white precipitate in the limewater, the unknown gas is not carbon dioxide.

Hold a moist piece of red litmus paper & a piece of moist blue litmus paper at the mouth of the test tube. If the damp red litmus paper turns blue, the gas is ammonia. The blue litmus paper remains blue.
