Test Review Flashcards
Global Wind Patterns
Wind goes from the poles (high pressure) to the equator (low pressure)
Coriolis effect
lines are curved due to the rotation of the earth
Land breeze
land cools (high pressure) - wind flows from land to the sea
Sea breeze
sea cools
High pressure system
low temperature
low pressure system
high temperature
The warmer the air - the more water vapor it can hold
air is less dense (more spaced out so it can hold more water)
Radar
know the picture that represents this - GOES is a type of radar
atmospheric pressure
higher up you are the less pressure weighs down on you
isobar
shows areas of equivalent pressure
be able to read a map - know the temperature based on the pressure
synoptic chart
shows: isobars, pressure, fronts
anticyclones (high pressure system) - fair, calm weather
northern hemisphere - clockwise
southern hemisphere - counter-clockwise
Cyclones (hurricane) know the following:
pressure, direction & hemisphere
cyclones (low pressure system) - bad, more windy & precipitation weather
northern hemisphere - counter-clockwise
southern hemisphere
warm front
warm mass of air is moving into an area
gentle rain over days
