Test 2 Flashcards
define ecology
Branch of biology that deals with organisms and their interaction and their physical surroundings.
Tropical Rainforest
tall trees, fruit trees, sloth, jaguar, always rainy, and has a canopy and understory
Tropical Dry forest
small-leafed plants, loose leaves, mountain lion, deer, alternating wet and dry seasons, and rich soils
Tropical savanna
grasses, waxy leaves plants, lions, cheetah, compact soils, frequent fires set by lighting
Desert
cactus, agave, snakes, lizards, rich soils, extreme temperatures (hot and cold)
Temperate grassland
woody chaparral plants, tough waxy leave/resist water, bison, zebra, periodic fires, its plains and prairies with fertile soil.
Temperate deciduous forest
trees dormant in winter, mosses, insects, frogs, Humus (material formed from decaing leaves), and cold winters warm summers (like michigan)
Northwester Coniferous Forest:
dense plant growth, sugar pine, white pine, wolf, moose, giant redwoods, has cool dry summers, and acidic soils.
boreal forest
: conifers, waxy leaves to prevent water loss, reindeer, wolverine, long cold winters acidic soil.
Tundra
Mosses, low plants, polar bear, elk, thin soil, and doesn’t snow that much
lotic freshwater ecosystem
(fast moving water) rivers and streams
Lentic freshwater ecosystem
(still waters) ponds, marshes, ditches, marches, lakes
bogs
dominated by moss;form in depressions where water collects;acidic water
marshes
shallow wetlands along rivers’,ay be underwater for all or part of the year;contain cattails, rushes, and other tall grass-like plants
swamp
water flows slowly through these “flooded forests”; presence of trees and shrubs is what makes it a swamp, not a marsh
