Test 1: The States of Matter Flashcards
How close or far are particles in a solid
They are packed very close together
Do the particles of a solid move at all?
YES! They vibrate because they are too smushed together to make any big movements
Do solids take the shape of their container?
NOOOOOOO
Will the amount of space a solid takes up change
NOOOOOO (think of putting a rock on a desk and then in a box, just because it’s in a different location doesn’t mean that it’s size has changed because its size is a constant)
How close are particles in a LIQUID
They are still close, but not as close as particles in solids
Do particles in a liquid move at all?
Yes! They often have a fluid/ sliding motion because of the empty space that is between the particles
Do liquids take the shape of their container?
Yes!
Does the volume of a liquid change
NOOOOO
How close are particles in a GAS
They are VERY far apart
Do particles in a GAS move at all?
Yes, they move in a constant, random motion
Do gases take the shape of their container?
YES
T/F
Gases can be compressed
True!!! (the particles just get pushed closer)
What do gas particles do when they expand
The particles don’t get bigger, they just spread out further and take up more space
