Test 1 ch 4 Flashcards
What are the 4 tissue types
epithelial, connective, muscle, and neural
4 functions of epithelial tissue
physical protection, control permeability, provide sensation, produce specialized secretions
gap junctions
connects cells using channel proteins that allow for rapid intercellular communication
hemidesmosomes
attaches a cell to extracellular filaments in the basement membrane for stabilization
simple epithelium
one layer of cells that cover the basement membrane
stratified epithelium
several layers of cells cover the basement membrane
squamous epithelium
thin, flat, irregular shape (jigsaw puzzle)
simple squamous epithelium
reduce friction, controls vessel permeability, performs absorption and secretion
found: lines ventral body cavities, vessels
stratified squamous epithelium
provide physical protection against abrasion, pathogens, and chemical attack
found: skin surface, lining of mouth, throat, esophagus, rectum, anus, and vagina
cuboidal epithelia
nuclei are near the center of each cell and the distance between adjacent nuclei is roughly equal to the height of the epithelium.
