What is a Plane?
It’s a straight line surface connecting two points
4 Common Planes:
Sagittal, Coronal, Horizontal, and Oblique
Sagittal Plane
Any longitudinal plane dividing the body into right and left parts
Midsaggital Plane
Divides body into equal left and right parts
Coronal Plane
Any longitudinal plane dividing the body into anterior and posterior parts
Midcoronal Plane
Divides the body into equal anterior and posterior parts
Horizontal (Axial or Transverse) Plane
Divides body into superior and posterior portions
Oblique Plane
A longitudinal or Transverse plane that is at an angle or slant and not parallel to the sagittal, coronal, or horizontal planes
Anterior/Ventral
Front
Ipsilateral
On the same side of the body (example: the right thumb and right great toe are ipsilateral)
Contralateral
Opposite side of the body (example: the right knee and left hand are contralateral)
Proximal
Near the source or beginning (the elbow is proximal to the wrist)
Closest to the trunk for limbs
Distal
Away from source
Cephalad
Cephalad angle is any angle toward the head end of the body
Caudad
Any angle toward the feet or away from the head end
Plantar
Refers to the sole of posterior surface of the foot
Dorsum
Refers to the top or anterior surface of the foot. In hands, refers to the back of posterior aspect
