Immunity
resistance to infection
vaccines
a preparation of killed or weakened microorganisms, inactivated toxins or components of microorganisms that is administered to stimulate an immune response.

the process of conferring a person with immunity to a pathogen by administering a vaccine.
Human Immunodeficiency virus
the virus that causes HIV infection and AIDS.
HIV infection
a chronic, progressive infection that damages the immune system.
opportunistic infection
an infection caused when organism take the opportunity presented by a primary infection to multiply and cause a new, different infection.
AIDS
an advanced stage of HIV infection
antibody
a specialized protein, produced by white blood cells, that can recognize and neutralize specific microbes
Asymptomatic
showing no signs or symptoms of a disease.
Pelvic inflammatory disease
an infection that progresses from the vagina and cervix to the uterus, oviducts, and pelvic cavity.
out of pocket
health care costs that you must pay on your own because they are not covered by insurance
deductible
the amount you must pay each year before your plan begins paying
co-insurance
the amount you must pay for medical care after you have met your deductible.
co-paymet
the flat fee you pay each time you receive medical care
managed care
an organized way of getting health care services and paying for care, feature a network of physicians, hospitals, and other providers who participate in the plan. In some plans some individuals must see an in-network provider; in other plans individuals may go outside of the network, but they will pay a larger share of the cost.
network
group of physicians, hospitals, and other providers who participate in a particular managed care plan.
Health Maintenance Organization
A form of managed care in which you receive all of your care from participating providers. You usually must obtain a referral from your primary care physician before you can see a specialist.
Preferred Provider Organization
A form of managed care in which you have ore flexibility in choosing physicians and other providers than HMO. You can see both participating and nonparticipating providers, but your out-of-pocket expenses will be lower if you only see plan providers.
Reasonable and customary charge
the prevailing costs of a medical service in a given geographical area.
Medically necessary
Services or supplies that are proper and needed for diagnosis and treatment
Durable medical equipment
medical equipment that is ordered by a doctor for use in the most. These items must be reusable, such as walkers, wheelchairs, or hospital beds.
Exclusions
Services not covered by a plan.
Catastrophic illness or injury
a very serious and costly health problem that could be life threatening or cause life-long disability.
Maximum benefits
The maximum dollar amount per period that a plan will insure.
pre-existing condition
a health problem you had before the date that a new insurance policy starts.
open enrollment
A set time of year when you can enroll in health insurance or change from one plan to another, without the benefits of a qualifying event - marriage, divorce, birth/adoption, or death of spouse.
Health savings account
an account established by an employer or an individual to save money toward medical expenses on a tax-free basis. Any balance remaining at the end of the year rolls over to the next.
Flexible spending accounts
Employees use pre-tax dollars to set up these accounts and draw on on them to pay qualified medical expenses during the year. Used amounts are forfeited at the end of the year
Portability
the legal right, after employment terminates, to transfer from a group insurance plan to another group or individual plan.
Appeal
A special kind of complaint you make if you disagree with a decision to deny a request for health care services of payment for health services you already received.
Physical activity
Any bodily movement produces by the contraction of skeletal muscles that increases energy expenditure above a basal level.
Aerobic physical activity
activity in which the body’s large muscles move in a rhythmic matter for a sustained period of time.
