Iwama
A small town in northeast Tokyo. During WWII, O-Sensei moved to Iwama to foster his training. O-Sensei founded Aikido and the Iwama dojo during this period. From O-Sensei’s death until 2002, the Iwama dojo was instructed by Saito Sensei, who was a long time student of O-Sensei. O-Sensei entrusted care of the Aiki Shrine to Saito Sensei. Saito Sensei died on May 13, 2002. We generally practice what is called “Iwama- Style” Aikido, which focuses on basic technique and the integration of Bukiwaza with empty hand techniques.
Jo
Wooden staff.
Kata
Shoulder. It also means “form” practice of pre-arranged exercises.
Katate
One hand (left or right)
Ki
Spirit. The vital force of the body; Universal Energy; a stream or flow of positive energy.
Kiai
A shout delivered to focus ones energy outward.
Kohai
Junior student.
Kokyu
Breath power. The coordination of ki flow and body movement with breathing.
Koshi
Hips.
Kyu
Aikido lower grade holder, generally a white belt rank. A mudansha or undergraduate.
Maai
Distance between uke and nage, meaning “harmony of space.”

Two hands holding one arm.

Heaven and earth throw.

A turn to the side. A pivoting movement - starting and finishing in the same Hanmi.

Thrust.

A strike (as in Shoman Uchi, Yokomen Uchi, etc.)
Uke
A person who receives an attack. Generally speaking, “uke” refers to the person being thrown.
Ukemi
The art of falling away from harm.
Ura
The attackers back, hidden area.
Ushiro
Behind, rear, back.
