Terminal Tractor Flashcards
What are the main objectives of the guide for technicians?
Technicians will use this guide to assist in:
- Explain proper performance of a PM on a yard tractor
- Identify and inspect items specific to yard tractors
- Describe operation of Auto-lube system
- Identify Hydraulic Operation
- Demonstrate retrieval of Allison Transmission Fault Codes
- Identify DYM system components
What type of Identification Numbers are assigned to DOT/EPA Trucks?
Only DOT/EPA Trucks are assigned 17 digit Vehicle Identification Numbers.
When are Heavy Duty Switcher PMs performed?
Preventative Maintenance is performed every 400 hours or 30 days.
Record the Hour Meter NOT the mileage
What should be checked during Tire & Wheel Inspection?
Check tire condition
Record tread depth & air pressure
Pull Steer Tires at 4/32”, Drives at 4/32”
Inspect valve cores and caps
Check condition of wheels and lugs
Check for Toe-in or Toe-out condition - Zero to -1/8th inch toe in.
How should the Transmission Lock-Out be tested?
If the terminal tractor uses a lever style transmission shifter, or a push button shifter
Place the shifter in forward and then reverse checking to verify that the starter will not engage with the shifter in either position.
Verify that the back-up alarm is working properly
What should be checked during Steering play, engine noise and climate controls inspection?
With the engine off turn the steering wheel, feeling for excessive play (max is 2.5 inches)
With engine running again listen for any unusual noises
Operate cab heat and blower controls

What should be done during the Drive-on Inspection?
Start by walking around the truck to ensure that it is safe to operate. Look for any signs of heavy fluid leakage and ensure no damage exists that would obstruct movement of the truck.
Check around the hydraulic tank for any leaks
Be sure to check that the hydraulic reservoir is full to the proper level
Check to be sure the cab latch is properly latched to the frame
What precaution should be taken during the Drive-on Inspection?
Never reach under the boom when it is raised regardless of how secure it looks.
Check the sliding door latch to see that it secures the door in both locations, open or closed
Inspect the seats and cab interior for any damage, loose and/or broken parts
Check condition of windows and glass
Inspect the fire extinguisher for proper mounting and charge
What should be checked during Starter, Instruments, wipers and back up alarm inspection?
Put the transmission in neutral, start the engine and listen for unusual starter noise
Check the gauges for proper operation
Watch to see that the oil pressure comes up
Allow the air pressure to build to 90 psi (in both tanks if so equipped)
Check the wiper operation
How should the Transmission and parking brake be tested?
With the parking brake applied place the transmission in forward gear and verify that it shifts into gear smoothly.
Next, increase RPM making sure the parking brake holds.
Release parking brake and verify a smooth release of the brakes.
While driving into the shop feel for any brake drag, pull or unusual noises from brakes
