Term 4 Flashcards
Above a B+
What is the Nucleus?
It controls the functioning of the cell and it contains the cells DNA (it is the ‘brain’ of the cell)
Plant and Animal
Looks like clam
What is the Nucleolus?
It is located inside the nucleus, it is responsible for producing and assembling ribosomes
Plant and Animal
Looks like pearl
What is the Cytoplasm?
It is a gel-like substance inside the cell where organelles are suspended, it allows for chemical reactions to occur
Plant and animal
Looks like Main Sea floor
What is the Mitochondria?
It is the powerhouse’ of the cell, it generates energy through cellular respiration
Plant and Animal
Looks like long crab (orangee red)
What is the Golgi Apparatis?
It modifies, sorts, and packages protein for storage or transport out of the cell
Plant and Animal
Looks like coral
What is the cell membrane?
It is selectively permeable and it plays a critical role in communication and signalling with other cells
Plant and animal
Middle rim of seafloor (plant cells)
Outer rim of sea floor (animal cells)
What is the Ribosomes?
It is the cell protein factories, with ribosomes both bonded ER and free. They read mRNA and translate that genetic code into a specified string of amino acids, which grow to form proteins.
Plant and animal
Little specs/bugs crawling on seafloor
What is the Vacuole?
It Stores water, nutrients and waste products and helps to maintain turgor pressure (keeps plant upright)
Plant cells
Water/ Puddle on sea floor
What is the cell wall?
It is the rigid cell wall made of cellulose which provides structure and support
Plant cells
Outer layer of sea floor (plant cell)
What is the Chloroplasts?
It contains the chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for photosynthesis and captures light energy and convert it into chemical energy
Plant cells
Sea cucumber
What is a Prokaryotic cell?
Prokaryotic cells are uni-celled organisms. They contain a cell wall, cytoplasm, ribosomes, and DNA, but do not have a nucleus or other organelles.
What is a Eukaryotic cell?
Eukaryotic cells are complex cells found in organisms from the domains Eukarya, which include animals, plants, fungi, and protists.
All eukaryotic cells contain:
○ Nucleus
○ Nucleolus
○ Cytoplasm
○ Mitochondria
○ Golgi apparatus
○ Cell membrane
○ Ribosomes
What is the base structure of all cells?
- Membrane
○ Houses the cell, and controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell- Cytoplasm
○ The fluid inside a cell, made of mostly water. Contains organelles. - Genetic material (DNA)
○ Carries the instructions for the production of proteins
- Cytoplasm
