Tendonitis/tendonopothy Flashcards
Define tendinopothy
A clinical syndrome characterized by pain, diffuse or localized swelling and impaired function, may occur with overuse of a tendon.
Define tendonitis
Inflammation of a tendon
Define paratendonitis
Inflammation of the paratendon or tendon sheath
Define tendinosis
Non inflammatory degenerative changes in a tendon
Compare the differences between tendinosis, tendinitis, paratenonitis and paratenonitis with tendinosis
Tendinosis: intratendinouse degeneration ( from aging or micro trauma)
Tendinitis: symptomatic degeneration of the tendon with vascular disruption and inflammatory repair response
Paratenonitis: inflammation of the outer layer
Paratenonitis WITH tendinosis: associated with intratendinous degeneration
What are the 4 classifications of severity?
1.) pain after use only
2.) pain at the beginning, not during, pain after
3.) pain at the beginning, during and after
4.) pain wth ADLs-pain gets worse
What are some questions you may ask if you suspect tendonitis?
1.) when did it start?
2.) what makes it worse?
3.) where is the location?
4.)do you do repetetive activities? Do you wear a brace? Does it help?
5.) have you done any new activities?
6.) any medications?
What are some possible test findings in regards to tendinopothy?
Arom: affected extremity usually painless
Prom: will have pain when affected tendon is fully stretched
rmmt: local pain on contraction, especially if muscle is in a stretched position
Referred pain: from local trigger points
What special tests might you do if you suspect tendinopothy?
Finklesteins
Empt can
Differentiation
What hydrotherapy may you use when tx tendinopothy?
Ice ( to decrease inflammation)
Contrast ( to increase tissue health)
Heat ( once inflammation is gone to increase pliability)
