Tectonic hazards Flashcards
Why do plates move
Convection currents
What are the types of plate margin
Destructive
Constructive
Conservative
What happens at destructive boundaries
The more dense oceanic plate subducts the continental plate which gives rise to composite volcanoes and earthquakes
What happens at constructive boundaries
The plates are moving away from each other and magma rises from the gaps and cools to form new crust
This creates shield volcanoes and mild earthquakes
What happens at conservative boundaries
Where plates are moving sideways
Large earthquakes can occur due to the build up in pressure
What kind of scale is the moment magnitude scale
Logarithmic (10x next one)
Why might people choose in areas at risk from tectonic hazards
Born there
Farming (rich soils near volcanoes)
Tourism
Ways to reduce the effect of tectonic hazards
Monitoring - seismometers (earthquakes) and measuring gas from a volcano
Prediction
Planning - emergency services can be prepared and people can be educated so they know what to do
Protection - earthquake proof buildings and strengthened buildings that don’t collapse under ash
