Aerobic, non motile
Stains pink with Zeihl Neelson stain
What is a Rienke complex?
Healed primary focus of disease
What is a skin manifestation of TB?
Erythema Nodosum
How does TB spread around body?
Haematogenous dissemination
Where does post primary disease tend to occur?
Lungs
Where does TB present systemically?
Lymph nodes
Bone- Pott’s disease or pain/joint swelling
ABdo- ascites, ileal malabsorption,
GU- Epididymitis, frequency, haematuria
Miliary TB, pleueal TB, hilar lymphadenopathy
How is TB diagnosed?
Mantoux doesnt pick up miliary TB or TB in immunocompromised and flase positive in BCG
ELISA used
How is TB treated?
Isoniazid and Rifampicin for 4 months (12 in CNS disease)
Pyrazinamide and Ethambutol for 2 months
If resistant add aminoglycoside
What are side effects of Isoniazid?
Peripheral neuropathy (Pyridoxine to treat!)
Psychosis
Haemolytic anaemia
Pellagra
What are side effects of Rifampicin?
Fever
Rash
Discoloured secretions
Drug interactions
What are side effects of Ethambutol?
Optic neuritis
Reduced acuity
Red green
What are side effects of Isoniazid?
“I can’t feel it”
Peripheral neuropathy
Treated with pyridoxine
Pyrazimanide side effects
Purine breakdown
Hyperuriceamia= renal failure
How long are you given all of the TB drugs for?
R- 4 months
I- 4 months
P- 2 months
E- 2 months
