How does NHS PS incorporate the 3 pillars of sustainability? / How is there increasing pressure placed on organisations including the RICS to adopt a sustainable business model ? What is JT environmental policy?
Social – Workwell initiatives
Environmental – Reduce printing, reusable cups
Economic – Compliance department, conflicts of interest management, training
It is our aim to minimise the use of all materials, supplies and energy and wherever possible we will use renewable or recyclable materials. We are committed to continual environmental improvement, and through our working practices, monitor these objectives.
Examples of specific areas where action is taken:
- waste paper is recycled
- paper supplies to be from recycled products or managed forests only
- staff are kept informed of our environmental policy and the subject is included is induction
courses held for all new staff
RICS Responsible Business Report provides a series of recommendations for real estate firms to create more forward-thinking, responsible business practices (2018/19).
The insightful report highlights the key ‘drivers’ for responsible business – including culture, people and technology - with recommendations centred around improving diversity and collaboration; well-being and employment; community and supplier engagement; and a firm’s environmental protection.
In addition to this approach, other recommended solutions to reduce a company’s operational impact - and help improve climate change – include introducing higher recycling rates and reducing energy, transport and water use, where possible. Increased resource efficiency, including the provision of plants within buildings to increase oxygen and the absorption of chemicals in the air, is also recommended.
Aims to encourage built environment firms to reduce their operational impact on the environment by committing to adopt the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

What actions have you undertaken to become a greener surveyor?
I am passionate about being green. I drive an efficient car and use satellite navigation to ensure I use less
fuel. My team also encourages regularly working from home which reduces emissions.
How does BREEAM help promote a more holistically sustainable commercial environment?
… basically just explain the various measures it measures, more than just energy efficiency.
