Summarise Flashcards
Summarise intro
The poem my grandmother washes her feet in the sink at the bathroom upstairs, written by Mohja Kahf, a Syrian American poet, tells the story of an elderly Muslim immigrant living in America and the conflicts she faces due to her different culture and beliefs. Due to the mandatory prayer time for Muslims, the elderly lady must perform a ritual washing for prayer (wudu), in the bathroom of a general store alongside her granddaughter. As she completes her practice, she’s interrupted and discriminated against by a group of mid western woman – who portray her as a disgrace to their American culture. Due to lack of cultural understanding between both parties, a cultural conflict occurs, offering the reader an insight on the overarching issues immigrants face, illustrating how the conflict between the elderly woman in the mid western woman can be used to further understand human nature and self perceived hierarchies keys in society
Summarise intro Billy
The film billy Elliot, directed by Stephen Daldry as a moving film that follows the story of a young boy of the same name, who strives to become a professional ballet dancer, well growing up in a bleak English mining town in the 80s with this isn’t considered an acceptable option. As the town grapples with the full burden of the minor strike in 1984 bracket – M protest at government closures – achieving his dreams seems unlikely for Billy. The town where he lives is very traditional in terms of gender roles and Billys immediate family and wider community are strongly against the prospect of a boy dancing let alone making a career out of ballet
