STP Flashcards
What are the basic functions of switch?
Filtering
Forwarding
Flooding
Blocking
What is STP?
Spanning Tree Protocol
Where does a Layer 2 loop occur?
When there a fault tolerant (parallel) links between switches
What does STP do?
Identifies parallel paths within a network and blocks one or more ports
What is the ROOT in STP?
The administrative Switch/Bridge
How does STP work?
ROOT Switch forwards on all ports BPDUs, servant devices than receive more than one BDPU will block a parallel port
What standards are associated with STP?
- 1d - STP
802. 1w - Rapid STP
When would a switch block?
STP to prevent L2 loop
When would a switch flood?
When it has no entry for the L2 destination address
When would a switch filter?
When it knows the L2 source and destination address and will send it just that address on a VLAN
When would a switch forward?
When not in a blocking state
What is BPDU?
Bridge Protocol Data Unit
What would you use to manage a switch remotely?
VLAN Interface (L3)
What would you use to directly manage a switch?
Console port
What is a VTY (Virtual Terminal)?
Used when remotely connecting to a switch or router
What is a AAA Server?
Authentication, Authorisation and Accounting
Central management repository for logging into switches or routers
What protocols are used to communicate with a AAA server?
RADIUS - Open Source
TACACS+ - Cisco Proprietary
DIAMETER
What is in-band and out-of-band management?
Switch management traffic is on same network as users
Out-of-band segregates the data into a VLAN and a different subnet
What purpose does an ACL serve on a router’s interface?
Access Control List can specify what information is allowed to be routed between VLANs
What is SPB?
Shortest Path Bridging
Eradicates STP and utilises all bandwidth
What standard is associated with SPB
802.1aq
