Define CD
Compact discs
- Access time is slower than a hard disk
- Easily damaged but not expensive
Define DVD
Digital versatile disk
Describe CD-ROM and DVD-ROM
Data can be read from but not written.
Used to prevent the deletion of data(e.g, distribution of software, music)
Describe CD-R and DVD-R
- Allow data to be written to them on one occasion only; after this, the data can only be read.
Describe CD-RW and DVD-RW
Can be written to repeatedly up to around 1000 times, used for continuously backing up data or archiving.
Data can recorded on them can be deleted.
Describe Bluray
High definition DVD format supported by a group of manufacturers led by Sony
Describe RAM
Random-access memory can be written to,read from and edited.
Volatile(cleared when the computer is switched off)
Describe ROM
Read-only memory, can be accessed in random order, but the data in it cannot be changed

Describe flash memory cards
A form of electrically programmable read only memory, uses to store photos on digital cameras
Pros of flash memory cards
- very compact
- very robust
Cons of flash memory cards
- expensive compared to hard drive disks
- lower storage capacity than hard disk
