Preparing a sterile field with a drape
A
- Inspect package for signs of tears, moisture, rips, and check expiration date.
- Perform hand hygiene
- Select clean, dry work surface above waist level
- Open cover; grasp folded tip of drape with fingertips of one hand
- Lift drape from wrapper without allowing it to touch anything
- Unfold holding away from body and keeping it above waist and work surface
- Discard wrapper w other hand, then grasp adjacent corner of drape and hold it over your intended work surface
- Position bottom half of drape over top half of work surface
- Remember that the outside 1 inch perimeter of the drape is NOT considered sterile

A
Grasp tip of outermost flap and open away from your body
Keep arm outstretched and away from sterile field
Open flap by pulling to side and allow to lay flat on work surface
KEEP ARM TO SIDE AND NOT OVER STERILE SURFACE

Sterile Field Principles (7)
A
- Sterile field remains sterile only if other objects that touch it are sterile
- If your hands or sterile object drop below waist level, both are considered contaminated
- Becomes contaminated if moisture permeates the field
- Everything on outer 1 inch margin of sterile field is not considered sterile
- Avoid reaching across sterile field
- Never turn your back on a sterile field
- Never leave the room after sterile field has been set up

Sterile Gloving Steps
A
- Select right size and type of gloves
- Examine package to ensure that it’s intact/dry/no tears or moisture
- Place package of gloves near where you’ll be working
- Inspect condition of your hands for cuts and lesions
- Perform hand hygiene
- Separate and peel apart two sides of package
- Grasp inner package and lay on clean, dry, flat surface at waist level
- Open package to keep gloves on inside surface of the wrapper
- Identify right and left glove; glove dominant hand first
- Using thumb and first two fingers of non dominant hand, grasp glove for dominant hand using the glove’s inside surface
- Pull glove over dominant hand, leaving a cuff; make sure fingers are in the proper spaces
- Slip gloved fingers into cuff of second glove and pull over on hand
- Interlock hands and hold above waist

Hands and wrists for at least 20 seconds, keep fingertips pointing down
